The System and me...
Even in the mid to late 90's , with System of a Down packing the clubs in their hometown L.A., they
had a fan following borderlining a cult status. Yet they still couldn't get signed to any record label. Many times
people would approach Serj and tell him to "stop screaming or you will never get signed!", however Serj would just thank them
for their advice and scream louder!
It wasn't until 1997 when they were watched, in the famous Viper Rooms, by the great Rick Rubin that
they were finally signed to America/Columbia Recordings.
They even had to fight for airplay of their work. Ironic seeing their most recent single 'B.Y.O.B.'
(Bring Your Own Bombs) from Mezmerize has been voted "most played track" by more than one metal radio station and several
rock clubs that I know!
They only managed to play the legendary Roxy Club through having to coinstantly hand out flyers for
gigs and by not stop hounding on Shavo's part! Yet they claim they were never out to get money.. or to get signed.
They were out to get FANS! They sure got them!
And now ten years after it all began System have just begun touring for the soon to be released "Hypnotise"
- the eagerly awaited doppleganger to "Mezmerize". Having heard "Kill Rock n Roll" at a friends I have a sneaking suspiscion
that this will be as big as the release of "Toxicity" (01). Roll on November!!!
It is System's drive alone that has inspired
me to fight for my dreams. I have always loved listening to music. Rock, Metal, Gothic, Country and yes even Pop
(sue me - I'll see you in court!). Eastern, Western, North and South - wherever it comes from Music in general is a
passion that burns me so intensely I have to write about it!
I dream of becoming a music journalist and
writer for musicians everywhee. Not just to see bands, meet bands, yeah - maybe one day having the honour of meeting
System. Writing is what I do... what I love doing. And Music EVERYWHERE is what I want to write about.
So this site is just one piece of my work
(long innit?!). Do I have talent? You decide. Am I obsessed? Maybe - but thing is I'm happy with who
I am, my life now and my hopes and dreams of the future. (honest if nothing else!).
So if System of a Down are to thank for that
then from the bottom of MY heart - THANK YOU SYSTEM OF A DOWN!!!!
